Preface: This was originally a dream scene, but due to the vivid imagery and unusual perspective of the dream, it became its own story. Originally Written: 9-4-22
A small Rabbit was resting in a bright and colorful garden, chewing on delectable flowers, and picking juicy fruits and grasses for his wife and baby bunny in the warren. As the Rabbit sniffs the vibrant flowers, he hears a small hush, accompanied by a chilling gust from behind. His ears shiver as his hair stands up from the chill.
Atop a small mound several feet from the flowerbed and overlooking the warren; a tall entity lurches; a bipedal rabbit nearly 4 feet tall from erect ear to paws. One ear stood tall above its small, round head as the other draped down to the left of its face, reaching the middle of its chest. Its beady eyes glared at Rabbit as it stood unmoving; balancing on its spindly knees which bent backward.
Rabbit gasped at the entity, which flashed into existence for a few seconds before vanishing. Searching around, Rabbit sniffs the air to see if what he saw was real or an illusion from the heat. Unable to see anything, Rabbit tells himself it must be the summer heat playing tricks on him. He continues foraging for his family before another gust of wind blows. Rabbit turns, and again sees the entity standing on the mound; unblinking as its eyes are fixated on Rabbit. In another brief second, it vanishes again.
Rabbit cautiously walks toward the mound to inspect the phenomena. Peculiar, he thinks to himself. No scents, no footprints, no hair, or any sign of whatever this thing was.
“If it were real, it would have left a trace behind, or I surely would have heard it; but nothing. I do not like this, I should return home.”
The creature appears again, towering over Rabbit as he freezes in fear. Up close, he can see its mangled and dirty hair, the unkempt nails which extend out far past its paws, the long and broken teeth nearly reaching its chin; and the same beady eyes fixated on him. The entity convulses and contorts as the sound of bones cracking echoes in Rabbit's ears. The entity's torso writhing and twitching while its feet remain rooted to the dirt. With a loud crack, the entity's spine breaks free from its body; its torso flopping forward while remaining standing. The vertebra, still connected to the hip, swings wildly in the air before swatting Rabbit across the garden, landing in a flower bush. The spine connects back in place, fixing itself back inside the torso. It turns and slowly walks toward the warren.
Rabbit picks himself up and sprints forward; quickly making up ground from the garden, trying to run past the entity to reach his family. The entity keeps its focus on the warren, and without looking, uses its long and lanky right arm to swat at Rabbit, knocking him away. Rabbit crashes into a stump with a loud thud.
Inside the warren, Mrs. Rabbit's ears twitch as she hears a commotion outside. Securing Baby Bunny into the back of the den, she slowly leans out the entrance to see her husband, recovering from his hit and racing back to the den with a panicked look on his face. Confused, she scans the area for what would cause his fright, when the entity flashes in front of her. She squeaks in shock, rushing back into the den and covering Baby Bunny with her body.
Rabbit watches carefully, but as he gets closer, the entity turns around and stares him down. Those beady eyes, Rabbit thinks to himself. Those. Horrible. Eyes. The entity tilts its head and then vanishes.
Rabbit looks around, his ears twitching and turning, trying to pick up any sound the entity could return. He inched his way closer to the warren, slowly moving, ready to sprint in case it appeared again. His ears twitch, and the sound of whimpering comes from his den. He creeps closer, reaching the entrance and peaking inside. He sees his wife and Baby Bunny, huddling and shivering in the corner.
Rabbit and Mrs. Rabbit sniff each other, before nudging their noses and cheeks together. Rabbits sits next to Baby Bunny, covering the child on 1 side as his wife covers it from the other. They sit together, watching the den entrance with their hair puffed up, their ears alert and their eyes focused on the entrance of the den.
